Meanwhile, elections were held in 1969. Then HaOlam HaZeh – Koah Hadash was set up hastily without a proper foundation, deliberately without a foundation. Then in 1968, after the war, there was a conference of HaOlam HaZeh where I presented the Palestinian flag for the first time. I have a beautiful picture where I'm standing at the podium with this flag. And as I said, the movement and the faction in the Knesset had been enlisted in its entirety to the matter of the Palestinian state. It was the linchpin of all our activities. Consequently, I had somewhat neglected the Arab public in Israel. Before 1967 we had devoted a lot of attention to it with convoys and conferences and everything you could want. After the war in 1967, we diverted our attention from the Arabs in Israel to the Arabs in the territories, and to the idea of a Palestinian state. Unfortunately, I think the first part was a mistake, that we neglected the Palestinian Arab community. And I spoke endlessly: in the Knesset, outside the Knesset, we wrote in HaOlam HaZeh, the newspaper Daf that appeared during the war and after the war, every day. I worked there full time, except for HaOlam HaZeh. I usually went to bed at 02:00 when we finished working on the daily paper. It was a murderous job, the work was completely mad - both HaOlam Hazeh and Daf, and also the Knesset. Today when I think about it, I really do not know how I was able to do it all, in terms of time. I managed only thanks to the fact that I am a yekke and live my life by a schedule and boundaries and time restrictions. By the way, I also went surfing once a week.

The newspaper Daf was unsuccessful. First of all there was a boycott imposed on the newspaper at all the kiosks in Israel. Yediot and Maariv were such mortal enemies that it is impossible to describe, more than the Jews and the Arabs, much more. But they banded together for the first time in history, and issued a joint ultimatum to all of the kiosks in the country: whoever sells Daf will not get Yediot and Maariv. So we had to sell it by hand, on the streets. We all recruited everyone during the day to stand on street corners and sell Daf. Rachel was recruited. Rachel had a small car of her own, a German car called Prince, a beautiful prince, a small and lovely car. And she really loved that car. And every morning she got up in the dark and went to Jerusalem and sold Daf on Ben Yehuda Street in Jerusalem. But to no avail. We never achieved any serious circulation and after a few months, I think two or three months, Daf folded. The losses, of course, were paid by HaOlam HaZeh. So unfortunately, I think it was the first 'withdrawal' of my life. Until that moment we had just stripped down and expanded and gone deeper. Closing Daf was, in fact, my first serious failure.

Uri Avnery (1923-2018) was an Israeli writer, journalist and founder of the Gush Shalom peace movement. As a teenager, he joined the Zionist paramilitary group, Irgun. Later, Avnery was elected to the Knesset from 1965 to 1974 and from 1979 to 1981. He was also the editor-in-chief of the weekly news magazine, 'HaOlam HaZeh' from 1950 until it closed in 1993. He famously crossed the lines during the Siege of Beirut to meet Yasser Arafat on 3 July 1982, the first time the Palestinian leader ever met with an Israeli. Avnery was the author of several books about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including '1948: A Soldier's Tale, the Bloody Road to Jerusalem' (2008); 'Israel's Vicious Circle' (2008); and 'My Friend, the Enemy' (1986).
