The first real book as such that I held in my hands, was the book for the Mass - meaning the Missal - for the Mass that the priest carries across from one side to the other, turning its page with respect, and contains the holy Catholic texts, in particular the Gospels. That book, yes, I respect it, we were putting it away in a particular cupboard in the sacristy, and we knew the words it contains by heart, which were prayers. Yes, so that was one of the first books I gave some importance to. That’s true.
French screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière (1931-2021) began his association with films aged 24 when he was selected by Jacques Tati to write for him. This early experience led to further contact with other film-makers, including Luis Buñuel with whom Carrière collaborated for many years. He wrote screenplays for films including Belle de Jour, The Discreet Charms of the Bourgeoisie, Tin Drum and Danton.
