When the siege of Beirut began, [Issam] Sartawi was concerned, and I was also worried. I thought then, as I think today, that there was no alternative for Arafat in the pursuit of peace. There was no one, no individual – and we see it clearly now – there was no person on the Palestinian side who, on the one hand, had the power, the desire, the ability to decide and, on the other, the admiration of the entire nation and of all the factions in it, in order to accept his decision. It is not enough to decide, one must also convince people to accept the decision. So I was very worried about the possibility that Arafat would be killed, and from the beginning of the war I worked with Sartawi trying to mobilize world leaders to support Arafat. Among other things Sartawi initiated a petition of important people like Bruno Kreisky, the Austrian Prime Minister, and Pierre Mendès-France, the former Prime Minister of France, whom I believe I have already mentioned, and the French Prime Minister at that time, François Mitterrand, who was a socialist. Mitterrand refused. Kreisky said about Mitterrand: 'He's a fascist'. And stupidly, I published this and Kreisky was very angry with me, very. It ruined the relationship between him and Mitterrand. At any rate nothing came of it. There was a petition, but it was not important.
When I came to Paris for one of the meetings with Sartawi to consult with him about what to do, Paris was 'closed', meaning that all of the hotels in Paris were full, I forget why – a car show or something like that. There wasn't a single room in any hotel in Paris. Then Sartawi told me: 'You can sleep here, in the office. I have a guest room, you can sleep there'. And that's what I did. Sartawi went home, he did not live in the office – he and his family lived somewhere in Paris – and I slept in Sartawi's office, which was protected by a half-dozen members of Fatah. It was a very strange experience sleeping in an apartment full of Fatah members. Then came this adventure in Beirut, and when I'd arranged to go through the lines in the morning, I called Sartawi to keep him in the loop about what was going on.
As soon as they told me that the next day I would meet Arafat, I called Sartawi for the sake of security. Later, he told me that he had not slept all night as he'd been calling Beirut to make sure that everything was in place so that I could continue to tell his story.
