In The Milky Way, the scene where the little girls are rehearsing with Agnes Capri, and then someone – one of the two pilgrims – listens to it and believes he heard the sound of gunshot and sees a picture of the Pope being shot, which is a dream, is obviously a strong scene as it contrasts sharply with the little girls, but at the same time, you could say it is immediately saved by Buñuel's humour as he gets the other character to say, 'You know, a pope being shot, you can be sure you'll never see that'.
French screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière (1931-2021) began his association with films aged 24 when he was selected by Jacques Tati to write for him. This early experience led to further contact with other film-makers, including Luis Buñuel with whom Carrière collaborated for many years. He wrote screenplays for films including Belle de Jour, The Discreet Charms of the Bourgeoisie, Tin Drum and Danton.
