In the meantime, Zygmunt Hubner gave me the opportunity to direct a play in the Stary Teatr because he had transferred from Teatr Wybrzeże to Stary Teatr where he was in charge and where he remembered me as his director and he wanted me to do The Wedding for him. He chose it himself; there's a great tradition of performing The Wedding in Kraków. The world premiere of this play was performed there in 1901. Here was where I encountered The Wedding for the first time and all of the problems that I mentioned when I talked about the film. Namely, I tried to show The Wedding as an event which isn't enveloped in dreary national reverence, but as an event that has something of a filmed news report for TV. I wasn't completely successful with this for various reasons but it was an important experience for me. I think that production of The Wedding was well received.
Mianowicie, próbowałem jakby tu to Wesele pokazać jako ewenement taki, no...
Polish film director Andrzej Wajda (1926-2016) was a towering presence in Polish cinema for six decades. His films, showing the horror of the German occupation of Poland, won awards at Cannes and established his reputation as both story-teller and commentator on Poland's turbulent history. As well as his impressive career in TV and film, he also served on the national Senate from 1989-91.
