And suddenly... I mean, I don't know why, while making the film he realised that it was an odious character. So he kept annoying Alfredo saying, 'No, I shouldn't be hitting her with a whip, it doesn't look good'. So he was becoming a guy who wasn't very... well, who was violent but who wasn't a bastard. In the end... I mean, he was one of the reasons the film didn't go very well.

Et brusquement, je veux dire je ne sais pas pourquoi, d'un seul coup en tournant le film il s'est rendu compte que c'était un odieux personnage. Alors il n'arrêtait pas de faire chier Alfredo pour lui dire, 'Non, je devrais pas lui taper dessus à coups de fouet, ça fait moche'. Alors il devenait un mec qui était pas trop, enfin qui était brutal mais qui n'était pas une salope finie. Finalement, je veux dire il a fait partie de ceux qui ont fait que le film s'est mal passé.

French cinematographer, Raoul Coutard (1924-2016) was twice nominated for the César Award for best cinematography which he won in 1978 for 'Le Crabe-tambour'. He made over 75 films and documentaries, including 'À Bout de Souffle', Le Mépris' and 'Band à Part'. He was the most acclaimed French cinematographer of his generation and one of the key figures of the New Wave.

En tant qu'assistant réalisateur, il a travaillé avec plusieurs grands cinéastes, notamment Luis Buñuel, François Truffaut, Otto Preminger et Woody Allen. Il fut membre fondateur du ciné-club Ciné-Qua-Non et a participé à la rédaction et traduction en anglais, de plusieurs ouvrages sur le cinéma.
