How I earned a million dollars

Our relationship was confrontational. Our foundation, the Batory Foundation, was unlike any of the other foundations. Namely, ours had at its outset a community of eminent people from the democratic opposition amongst whom Adam Michnik was the first to join the council. One of the founders was Marcin Król – there was a group of eminent professors who were recognised by the authorities. This foundation had been registered during Jaruzelski's time in office. Jaruzelski had received Soros and so that's when permission had been granted – this was already a sign of the liberalisation that was to come just before the end. What it says about Soros is… I wasn't in Poland yet at that time but later, I took him to the Prime Minister after the Solidarność government had collapsed when the first Prime Minister was briefly in office – that was Waldemar Pawlak, the leader of the peasant's party. Later, he was Prime Minister for a second time but only for 30 days. He had made an appointment with Soros and I drove him there. I was wondering whether to take a taxi or some elegant car but I took the cinquecento, that small little thing we had at the foundation, it was in a terrible condition. Soros was sitting next to me and we were driving along, I was going to bring him back afterwards. And he says, 'When I set up a foundation in Russia, they immediately bought ten of the most expensive Western cars'. So then I knew that I'd just earned a whole heap of money. I'd earned at least a million dollars by driving him in that old jalopy with its uncomfortable seats.

But our confrontations were… our relationship was complex. I mean, he definitely respected and liked me and wanted me to take part in various discussions and consultations that he considered to be important. But at the same time, they were confrontational because of the changeable fixture of our foundation there was never any of what you'd normally feel towards the person who was providing the funds. Namely, a certain weakness, a certain asymmetry of relations. There was an immediate sense of a kind of equality and complete independence verging on a fairly far-reaching nonchalance.

Więc Soros siedzi obok mnie, jedziemy, jedziemy, później go zawożę z powrotem. I on mówi: „No tak, jak jak założyłem w Rosji fundację, to oni natychmiast kupili 10 najdroższych samochodów zachodnich”. No, to wiedziałem, że zarobiłem kupę kasy. To znaczy pewnej słabości, pewnej asymetrii stosunków.  Tutaj było natychmiast poczucie pewnej równości i niezależności kompletnej, nawet daleko idącej nonszalancji.
