[Q] Do you go to the meetings that cinematographers organise once in a while?

Once in a while, to the AFC I don't go, I don't go anymore.

[Q] No?

No, I was part of it at one point. I mean, I was part of it at the time of it's creation. Well, so it's important to say that I'm quite annoying, because first of all I don't really like those... I'm not either on... what is it called... the Césars. I got one but I'm not a member of the academy.

[Q] Which film did you get the César for?

I got it for... Damn, Drummer Crab. Drummer Crab. So and I'm not a fan of those co-opted association. When there was the whole fabrication of that society thing, the AFC. Well, I was one of the... One of the guys that worked on it's setting up. So it was quite amusing because there was a certain number of peoples who were there. We had started by saying this is what we're going to do, etc. So I say yes, it's not bad. I had been thinking about it for a while, I was thinking: I don't understand why we're not doing that thing in France, we'll wait until the last minute. In reality, we never did it because everyone was lulled into a sense of security of the Cinema Centre which meant that we weren't allowed, etc. But all of a sudden, Europe starting to open up, wham! So they couldn't prevent cinematographers from coming.

So, well, there was that aspect and the first thing I felt was unpleasant, meaning that... The guy who had called me had said, 'We need to meet up, so it's an association, we know that we'll have to elect a president, Pierre Lhomme will be elected.

[Q] How could he know that Pierre Lhomme was going to be elected before the election?

Well, yes, we can say it. When in the Soviet Union, we know who is going to be elected. Yes, well, it's a peculiar sense of democracy, but well, let's move on. No, no, we weren't talking about democracy, we were talking about cinema. So, well, he had done that. So afterwards I met him and then afterwards at one point I say, 'It's really incredible on the meeting', I mean... It made me think of the whole New Wave thing where there were all the Mafioso of the Cahiers du Cinéma. There I said, 'Listen, there's still a guy, I don't see his name in it. Nevertheless it's a very famous guy', it was Willy Glenn. 'Ah yes, no, no, but he's a very disputed guy'. I say, 'What do you mean a very disputed guy, because I am not disputed?' 'Well, yes, yes, but you have to understand the problem is that Kodak and Fuji have said: you've set up your thing but you need guys... Your association still needs to have people with a certain fame'. So obviously they couldn't do otherwise than drag me into it. Well, so it made me laugh, really, I didn't give a damn.

So... and in the end there was that thing. Afterwards I went to test a few things so that the association was set up, so much the better. Pierre Lhomme was elected democratically. So much the better. His first words were, 'So I've been elected, but you don't actually think that when I'll have finished a film I'll come and get bored here, I'll go back to Corrèze, take care of my things. And actually I will come because I don't want that little idiot whose name I can't remember to take over'. It came right on time because we had just been talking about ethics. I was talking about ethics. Well... So those are sorts of things which really got on my nerves.

[Q] Pour quel film tu as eu le César?

Je l'ai eu pour... Merde, Le crabe tambour.
