J'ai fait un film que les Anglais ne connaissent pas du tout qui s'appelle Scruggs.

Je veux dire bon j'avais été tourner des trucs, parce que quand il y a des scènes en Angleterre, on a été tourner des bricolos mais c'était dans des films, dans le cours de films français etc. David Hart c'était un mec qui était venu me voir en France, tout ça, il parlait très très bien français. Et bon c'était un type qui voulait faire un film comme Godard. Je pense que comme il avait un père qui avait beaucoup de ronds, il a dû trouver... Ça a dû être facile pour lui... Mais c'était quand même un film à deux ronds, quand même. C'était... le scénar était pas mal, enfin d'un seul coup là, je veux dire après mon échec hollandais, je me suis dit je vais faire ce film en Angleterre, il y a quand même des trucs, j'ai beaucoup de mal. Avec les Anglais, j'arrive à comprendre ce qu'ils racontent, quand même plus facilement qu'avec les Américains. Donc je me suis dit je vais pouvoir me débrouiller.
Et puis c'était... Mais c'était filmé quand même dans une incohérence la plus complète, il n'y avait pas de... Bon c'était dans ce qu'il croyait être le tournage de Godard, c'est-à-dire on faisait un petit peu n'importe quoi je veux dire. Bon ce qui fait que le film n'a pas eu de succès. Alors d'ailleurs c'est assez drôle parce qu'il n'y a pas très longtemps on m'avait proposé de venir parler à une association anglaise, je n'arrive plus à me rappeler comment ça s'appelle... Et je devais faire, on devait parler du cinéma Nouvelle Vague avec un metteur en scène Anglais qui s'appelle Figgis. Et finalement je veux dire j'étais... On s'est rencontrés un petit peu avant, parce que comme on ne se connaissais pas, de manière à pouvoir se mettre d'accord avec le gars qui faisait la traduction. Et puis il lui dit, 'Tiens Coutard il a fait un film avec un metteur en scène, j'ai jamais entendu parler, il s'appelle David Hart'. Et l'autre lui dit, 'Mais je le connais très très bien parce qu'il jouait dans...' – Figgis il fait de la musique aussi – 'et il jouait dans mon groupe, c'était lui le batteur'.

I mean... well, I'd been to England a few times, we went to film a few things out there but it was mainly for French films. David Hart was a guy who came to see me in France, and he spoke French very very well. And so it was a guy who wanted to make a film like Godard. I think that because his father had a lot of money, he must have found... it must have been easy for him to make it. But it was still quite a bad film. It was... the screenplay wasn't bad, well, all of a sudden, I mean after my Dutch failure, I thought, 'I'm going to do that film in England', there are still things, I really struggled. But I manage to understand the English more easily than the Americans. So I thought I'd be able to manage.
And then it was... But the filming was completely incoherent, there was no... So he did it in the way he thought Godard did, meaning that we were doing just about anything. So it meant that the film wasn't really a box-office success. In fact, it was quite amusing because not long ago I had been offered to come and give a talk at an English association, I can't remember what it's called. And we were supposed to talk about the New Wave cinema with an English director called Figgis. And in the end I was... We had met a little earlier, because we didn't know each other, in order to work things out with the guy who was doing the translation. And so he tells him, 'Coutard here did a film with a director I've never heard of, called David Hart'. And the guy tells him, 'But I know him very very well because he played in...' – Figgis also plays music – 'and he played in my group, he was the drummer'.
