Ten przynosi pięć złotych, ten bierze komunikat, przepisuje, jak ktoś bierze komunikat i przepisuje to zwraca dwa egzemplarze, jeżeli jeden zwraca, dwa egzemplarze – taka zasada – płaci. To znaczy, że my teraz musimy zakasać rękawy i zacząć zbierać podpisy. Żeby to rozstrzygnąć w sposób demokratyczny, to by należało wprowadzić zasadę przynależności. My z tego numeru byliśmy niesłychanie dumni.

We set up this operation of writing complaints. Workers would write complaints about the way they'd been tortured because as it turned out, torture was employed and it was extreme. They beat them terribly. In view of this, we organised, everyone wrote a complaint, and these complaints were sent to the prosecutor's office. The UB responded by rounding up our clients, locking them up, threatening them, bribing them or both one and the other, so they were both threatened with torture and bribed until they recanted and wrote that what they'd written before wasn't true but that they'd only written it because they'd been given 500 złoties by KOR, or 1,000 złoties by KOR. We'd get letters all the time saying, 'Dear Mr Kuroń, I don't want your Jewish money. Please find enclosed the 500 złoties that I am returning to you', which meant that he'd got 1,500 for himself and 500 to send to us since he didn't want any Jewish money. After that, he'd be released and then our people would go and see him straight away... he'd sit down and immediately start writing, and he'd write that it wasn't true, that he'd been forced, that the money had been given to him and so on and so on. After this, we'd publicise everything and we'd invite journalists, so then they'd come and take these people away again. There was a man from Radom called Wiatas who was severely tortured, who recanted four times. Finally, he went to the prosecutor's office with Siła-Nowicki where Siła-Nowicki said emphatically that this could not carry on, and this did have an effect although something else was effective, too. When we realised how this operation was going, we decided that we need to advance, meaning we needed to come out with another operation against them, and we came up with the idea of punishing the guilty. We had objectives, and among the five objectives of KOR was the release of prisoners, reinstatement of employment on the same terms as previously, and punishment of the guilty. But we didn't bother much with punishing the guilty. At that time, we decided to launch... we made an announcement as KOR in which KOR wrote about the torture, the forced retractions, the lawlessness of the police, and that the only remedy is to punish the guilty and that we demand their punishment and call on everyone to write letters. We made this announcement and a conflict broke out because how was this supposed to work? It worked on the basis of anyone who wanted to co-operate, was free to do so. One person would bring 5 złoties, someone else would copy the Komunikat, when someone took the Komunikat to copy it, they would bring back two copies and if they brought back two copies, the rule was that they had to pay. Eventually, there were those who were prepared to travel to Radom, to Ursus, and they travelled, didn't they? Janek Kieluś sings about this beautifully in his song, 'I remember Radom red as the beaten backs of the people'. There is a story but who, who's in charge here, is KOR in charge? No, KOR isn't in charge, KOR is a representative body, it is the cap that's worn for representation. As long as it's collecting money and making statements, everything is fine, but when it makes announcements calling for signatures, I remember people from Radom especially telling us because they rebelled terribly and I remember that very well. Zbyszek Romaszewski and Stefan Starczewski spoke very strongly on the issue: if you've made this type of announcement, what does it mean? It means that we now have to roll up our sleeves and start collecting signatures. Because we won't allow this announcement that you've made to be wasted and for there not to be any signatures, so these signatures need to be organised, right? And that means that this is what we'll be doing and nothing else. That's the dispute over power. In spite of everything, by collecting information, organising various actions, collecting signatures and publishing a bulletin and information KOR was becoming an authority and not just a representative. The decisions it made had consequences for various people. Although we were uncompromising in sticking to the rule that the people who were publishing all these bulletins were, that every group was fully independent and took independent decisions in the course of its work. You could say this was the legacy of the Walterowcy. So much work - as much authority as there was work. However, KOR was a representative body, not an authoritative one but it is responsible for the consequences. To sort this out democratically we would need to introduce a rule of membership. But we resisted this very strongly because it's a very constricting rule. Instead of these hundreds of thousands of people working with us, thousands maybe even hundreds of thousands, we'd have... no, I'm exaggerating but there were several thousand at least. But if we were to gather together those who would be members, we'd have 120? 150? At the most, 300. Of course, we couldn't do this. Nevertheless, the whole exercise was set in motion and was working and the signatures were coming in. We started with the professors, the intellectuals, all kinds of artists, well-known ones, artists known in show business which played a huge role and was enormously important across a broad spectrum. At the same time, a very interesting operation was commenced in Ursus in defence of those colleagues who'd been dismissed. They collected 1,500 signatures there, I don't remember exactly. Or maybe three. In any case, it was a vast number because this was the beginnings of workers' self-government. We were very proud of that.

The late Polish activist, Jacek Kuroń (1934-2004), had an influential but turbulent political career, helping transform the political landscape of Poland. He was expelled from the communist party, arrested and incarcerated.
