Oppression does not have a country, it doesn't belong to one side, there is no choice, we can all be subjected to it one day, either as the oppressed or the oppressor, we can be, as Buñuel used to say, 'I am against fanaticism, fanatically… against fanatics'. That's what we tried to show through Goya's Ghosts with Milos Forman, someone who can go from right-wing to left. The film was badly received, and not at all understood I think, except by a few... but it is true that... we have that tendency to think it always comes from one side, as if the history of civilisations and societies had only gone towards one side, and I don't think it is true as we are all threatened by the possibility of being one day a tyrant to somebody else's thoughts.
French screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière (1931-2021) began his association with films aged 24 when he was selected by Jacques Tati to write for him. This early experience led to further contact with other film-makers, including Luis Buñuel with whom Carrière collaborated for many years. He wrote screenplays for films including Belle de Jour, The Discreet Charms of the Bourgeoisie, Tin Drum and Danton.
