We need a new concept of socialism

I have been a committed socialist since the Second World War. To be honest, I wasn't a member of any socialist organisations then, I was only in the Home Army. First, I was in the Grey Ranks, then in the Baszta regiment but by then I was coming across socialists, for example, there was one of the Wódke brothers – they were the people from both the Płomienie group and from the Grey Ranks. I met one of the Wódke brothers around this time, and after a short conversation, we realised that although he was probably more mature, we were both socialists. It's not surprising that when the idea was formed to renew the Polish Socialist Party, I found myself among the people who'd formed that party and because of my history, my age and various other factors, I was made the party leader. It's a bit... I'm surprised myself, wondering if it speaks well of me that I'm still stubbornly a socialist after all this time. However, I hope this party which today is weak and not very numerous, will yet play a big and positive role in the life of Poland; we'll need to learn a lot, of course, because socialism today, socio-democracy in Europe is something quite different from what it was some years ago. In my opinion, we'll need to learn from the Swedes primarily, but also from others. I think that the time when we'll be able to really play a part in shaping the country is still a few years off. Right now, we need to overcome a massive yet understandable aversion to the word socialism. Whenever I meet with people in public and we talk on this subject, I always see how hard this will be, yet because of this I hope that generally the audience I'm addressing feels this, and I can hear from what they say that they've slightly changed their attitude towards socialism, which doesn't mean that they will become socialists or supporters of socialism. But those people who hold markedly different views and who will never be members of the Polish Socialist Party nor will they support it by voting for it at some point in the future, even they are convinced after I've talked with them that it's not right or proper to confuse these two concepts of socialism – the one which is important to me and the other which is used by communists whom I regard here simply as thieves who have appropriated a word which they did not have the slightest right to claim.

Jan Józef Lipski (1926-1991) was one of Poland's best known political activists. He was also a writer and a literary critic. As a soldier in the Home Army (Armia Krajowa), he fought in the Warsaw Uprising. In 1976, following worker protests, he co-founded the Workers' Defence Committee (KOR). His active opposition to Poland's communist authorities led to his arrest and imprisonment on several occasions. In 1987, he re-established and headed the Polish Socialist Party. Two years later, he was elected to the Polish Senate. He died in 1991 while still in office. For his significant work, Lipski was honoured with the Cross of the Valorous (Krzyż Walecznych), posthumously with the Grand Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (1991) and with the highest Polish decoration, the Order of the White Eagle (2006).
