In addition, thanks to the fact that I was associated with the National Endowment for Democracy in Washington in the Journal of Democracy – I’m still on the editorial board – which is published in Washington, I attended many conferences there, too. I was and still am the vice-president of the scientific council and now, under this government, of the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna which used to be headed by my friend, the late Krzysztof Michalski. Well, I’m gradually relinquishing that position. Until recently and for the past 10 years, I’d been one of the founders of the European Council of International Politics, I gave up being on the board and now I’m just a member of the ECFR itself, but I’m not on the board any more. I have this feeling that I ought to reduce the amount of things I’m engaged in. Not that I’m tired, but I think that primarily a change ought to take place, a change of generations, and I also ought to concentrate more on issues associated with Poland.

I liked that life very much, I have to admit. This type of contact with people, these conferences you could say often replace the 19th century salon except that it’s global and you meet the same people with whom you have a close bond at a conference on the other side of the world. There’s always time to go for a drink and to talk about things which aren’t strictly about the conference so I had the chance to have these kinds of meetings of which I have far fewer now; I probably don’t need them quite so much anymore.

Byłem też wiceprzewodniczącym – i pozostaję wiceprzewodniczącym rady naukowej i teraz Instytutu Nauk o Człowieku w Wiedniu, którym kierował mój przyjaciel, nieżyjący już, Krzysztof Michalski.
