What's tragic is that in the end, it's a profession that doesn't have... I mean, there is no... It's not like selling shampoo where you think: that's the pedal we will press. We have no way of knowing how well a film is going to do. That's why it's an injustice because there are films which no one has talked about and when they are released, there are already 200 people queuing. A film that no one has spoken about. How did they find out about it, what happened? No one knows. For example, when I did Hoa Binh; so it's an example to show that there's nothing we can do against that sort of thing, because when we did Hoa Binh, the film was... We had some sort of security, because as I already mentioned, since it was Warner and that at the time they had The Night of the Generals coming out afterwards, they forced a certain amount of movie theatres to keep the film, which enabled us to have a safety net. So there was... So what can we do to get people to come? It would be good to have Radioscopie with Chancel. So I knew Chancel, I had met him when he was in Saigon. So I called him, he said, 'I'll do you a Radioscopie in the next three days'. In fact, there was a joke at the time, because the soundtrack for Hoa Binh was by Michel Portal. Michel Portal is a guy that makes quite baroque music, from time to time, with frying pans, which he bangs on, etc. And at the same time he plays the clarinet and he plays... And so I had asked them to bring the soundtrack and of course it hadn't arrived, so they had nothing for Michel Portal. So while I was answering the questions, they give me a disc, and the girl points at something. I was answering Jacques' questions, and I read something by Michel Portal, and I say, 'So all right, that one'. But I didn't know what it is, I hadn't read what it was.

So now we are going to take a short break to listen to Michel Portal. And I hear something dreadful. Damn, what is this? So Chancel picks up his phone. Obviously when... 'So Mr. Coutard, we've just heard Michel Portal, but you're not going to make us believe that you listen to Stackhausen in your living room'. So we needed to have Radioscopie, we got Radioscopie, but it still wasn't working. So it would be good to have Mr. Garraud or Mr. Fig's ticket, there was something in the Figaro. Damn, who do I have to talk to? In the end, I called the captain, major Froiss, who was our boss in Indochina and who was in charge of news, of the promotion of the news at the Medef, but it wasn't called the Medef at the time. So he set up a dinner with the guy from the Figaro, and the next day wham, we have the ticket in the Figaro. The entries still stayed the same. So we started wild posting, we set a pack on Paris. So we had to do something... So listen, if you agree, I'm going to go to the RATP and all the guys that show up with an RATP card get the student discount. So I went to the RATP, I made them the offer. 'Yes, yes, all right! We'll put posters up'. Not one guy from the RATP showed up. So after a while, and I don't remember, there's something else, there were loads of things like that, that you needed to have. All that to say that at one point, when it doesn't want to work, it doesn't work. We have to poke, do a whole load of things. It doesn't work. So afterwards, since there was the Gueville, which was...

[Q] Yves Robert?

Yves Robert, he had said... When The War of the Buttons wasn't working, in order not to get thrown out I bought the entries so as to always be within the quota to stay three weeks, and indeed it started up in the fourth week. So obviously we had to convince Warner to stay until the fourth week, but it stayed the same in the fourth week. On top of that, our Vietnamese thing wasn't working either. It had been a complete flop.
