Ja go spotkałem po raz pierwszy – Karola – zanim jeszcze wróciłem do Polski, w Instytucie, z którym jestem związany od trzydziestu lat. W Wiedniu jestem wiceprzewodnicącym Rady Naukowej Instytutu Nauk o Człowieku, którym kierował mój nieżyjący już przyjaciel, o którym będę mówił, Krzysztof Michalski. I wtedy w tym Instytucie Krzysztof, który miał zawsze wyczucie potrzeby chwili – i to był naukowy instytut, ale również miał taką misję, można powiedzieć, cywilizacyjną dla naszej części Europy. Krzysztof organizował razem, ten Instytut, z innym bliskim mi człowiekiem, chociaż nie tak bliskim, to był ksiądz Józef Tischner – wielka postać polskiego katolicyzmu. To był intelektualista otwarty... otwarty bardzo człowiek. I... i Krzysztof po ‘89 roku uczynił z tego Instytutu ważne miejsce polityczne. To znaczy on organizował tam konferencje – to były jedyne miejsca, gdzie się spotykały elity z całego regionu, i nie tylko z regionu – to znaczy były takie konferencje, na które przyjeżdżała czołówka, Geremek, Michnik, Kuroń. Z drugiej strony przyjeżdżał Orban, János Kis, mój przyjaciel, o którym będę mówił, któ przyjeżdżał, Żeliu Żelew – pierwszy prezydent Bułgarii i tak dalej, w tej chwili nie pamiętam wszystkich nazwisk, ale tam później na różne konferencje przyjeżdżał też Lech Kaczyński, nieżyjący, tragicznie zmarły w wypadku samolotowym. On chyba nie był wtedy prezydentem, kiedy przyjeżdżał. W każdym razie był jednym z przywódców tej partii, z której wywodzi się dzisiejsza formacja, rządząca obecnie. Wtedy to się nazywało Porozumienie Centrum.

I met Karol for the first time before I returned to Poland in the institute that I've been associated with for the past 30 years. In Vienna I'm the vice-chairman of the Scientific Council – to this day, I'm the vice-chairman of the Institute of Human Sciences which used to be headed by my late friend about whom I will speak, Krzysztof Michalski. In this institute Krzysztof, who always could sense what was needed at a particular moment… this was a research institute but it also had a mission that you could say was civilizational for our part of Europe and in fact that goal… he organised this institute with another person with whom I was close, although not that close, and that was Fr Józef Tischner – a very important person in Polish Catholicism. He was an intellectual who was very open. Following '89, Krzysztof made this institute important politically. He organised conferences there – it was the only place where elites from the entire region and beyond would meet. There were conferences which were attended by Geremek, Michnik, Kuroń. On the opposite side there was Orban, my friend János Kis about whom I'll say something more and who was the leader of the opposition before '89. Havel would come, Zhelyu Zhelev who was the first Bulgarian president and so on... I don't recall the names of everyone who was there, but the late Lech Kaczyński, who died tragically in an airplane accident, would come to some of the conferences. I don't think he was the president at that time. In any case he was one of the leaders of that party which the present government has grown from. At that time it was called Centre Agreement.
