This film Roly Poly gave me a kind of... revitalised me even though I'd made a big mistake in not turning this into a longer story which I could have used for a feature-length, colour film for the cinema. I decided it was time I made a contemporary film, not to go deeper into fiction or history but to make a contemporary film especially since artists were beginning to appear among the people with whom I kept company. They were people who made films, actors, in short, everything that surrounded me and that had grown up with me and become my world.
Polish film director Andrzej Wajda (1926-2016) was a towering presence in Polish cinema for six decades. His films, showing the horror of the German occupation of Poland, won awards at Cannes and established his reputation as both story-teller and commentator on Poland's turbulent history. As well as his impressive career in TV and film, he also served on the national Senate from 1989-91.
